(2024-10-31) Insala means: Hunger
In Zambia, where we have been serving for 24 years, we are witnessing an unprecedented drought and hunger crisis. The word Insala, meaning hunger in ChiBemba, echoes everywhere. This year’s rainy season—which should last from November to April to ensure a good corn harvest—only began in January and ended by early March. We watched with heavy hearts as the corn withered in the fields before the cobs could even form. Many wells have dried up, and people now walk for kilometers just to collect drinking water. Home vegetable gardens are no longer feasible.
The cost for a seven-member family, surviving on one meal a day, is around 350 Kwacha (16 USD) for a bag of cornmeal. Seeds and fertilizer are also necessary, adding another 40 USD. Supporting a single family costs 225 PLN.
